The collection problem with financed phones
Phones are one of the most common products bought on EMI in India. They are also one of the hardest to collect on. A personal loan has paperwork and a long relationship behind it; a ₹15,000 phone loan often has neither. When a borrower stops paying, chasing a small amount by phone or field visit can cost more than the EMI itself.
Device locking gives the lender a fair, low-cost lever: the financed device itself.
How it works, step by step
- Enrolment at sale. When the phone is sold on EMI, it is enrolled in the locking system and linked to the loan.
- Reminders. Before each due date, the borrower sees a reminder on their screen.
- Lock on a missed EMI. If the EMI stays unpaid after the grace period, the lender can lock the device from a dashboard. The lock screen shows the amount due and how to pay.
- Unlock on payment. As soon as the payment is confirmed, the device is unlocked.
- Release at closure. When the loan is fully repaid, the device is released from the system for good.
Doing it fairly
Locking only works long term if borrowers trust it. Good practice looks like this:
- Explain the lock clearly at the time of sale and take the borrower's consent.
- Always send reminders before locking, never lock without warning.
- Keep emergency calling available on a locked device.
- Unlock quickly after payment, so the lock never feels like a punishment.
- Follow the applicable RBI guidelines on fair practices and recovery, and get your own legal advice for your lending model.
Who uses it
NBFCs and micro-lenders use it to protect consumer-durable loan books. Fintech platforms plug it into a digital lending journey. Retailers selling on EMI through finance partners use it to say “yes” to more customers with less risk.
