Why the brand warranty is not enough

Almost every new device comes with a one-year brand warranty. It covers manufacturing defects: a speaker that stops working, a charging port that fails, a motherboard fault. It does not cover the things that most often go wrong in daily life, like a cracked screen after a fall or a laptop that met a cup of tea.

That gap is what protection plans fill. The trick is knowing which plan matches which risk.

1. Screen protection

Screen protection is the most focused plan. It pays for repairing or replacing a damaged display and touch panel.

  • Best for: smartphones and tablets, especially large-screen and foldable models where a new display is expensive.
  • Usually covers: cracks, shattered glass, touch not responding after a fall.
  • Usually excludes: scratches that don't affect use, intentional damage, and damage to other parts of the phone.

2. Accidental damage protection

Accidental damage protection (ADP) is wider. Along with the screen, it covers damage from drops, knocks and, in many plans, liquid spills.

  • Best for: people who carry their devices everywhere: students, field staff and anyone with kids at home.
  • Usually covers: physical and liquid damage from an accident, on phones, laptops and tablets.
  • Check: how many claims are allowed per year and whether there is a small processing fee per claim.

3. Extended warranty

Extended warranty starts where the brand warranty ends. It covers the same kind of breakdowns (electrical and mechanical faults) for an extra 12 to 36 months.

  • Best for: TVs, ACs, refrigerators, washing machines and laptops: things you expect to use for many years.
  • Usually covers: parts and labour for faults that happen during normal use.
  • Doesn't cover: accidents. A dropped TV needs ADP, not an extended warranty.

A quick way to decide

Your worryPick this
“I always crack my screen”Screen protection
“Drops, spills, accidents in general”Accidental damage protection
“It might break down after year one”Extended warranty
“I bought it refurbished or second-hand”Pre-owned device protection

Many people combine plans: ADP for the first year when the device is new and carried around, and an extended warranty for the years after.

Before you buy any plan

  • Read the exclusions, not just the headline cover.
  • Keep your invoice. Most claims need it.
  • Check the time limit for buying a plan after the device purchase.
  • Ask how pickup, repair and return work in your city.
